Nuts as functional superfoods

The Importaco Nuts report, developed in collaboration with Food Republik & Food Scouting, analyses how the market for almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, cashews and pistachios is evolving.

Having explored changes in household consumption and the role of new generations and innovation in flavours and experience, this article looks at the third major trend identified in the report: the growing importance of health and functionality in food choices, with a particular focus on nuts.

The functional and nutritional value of nuts

Nuts stand out for their high nutrient and energy density. Their nutritional profile combines healthy fats, fibre and high-quality protein, making them valuable allies as part of a balanced diet.

From a nutritional perspective, they provide plant-based protein, fibre, healthy fats and a wide range of micronutrients. Looking at individual varieties, each has its own distinctive nutritional profile: peanuts stand out for their protein content; almonds and hazelnuts provide significant amounts of vitamin E; while pistachios, together with hazelnuts, are particularly rich in monounsaturated fats.

Their value, however, goes beyond these essential nutrients. Nuts also contain bioactive compounds that enhance their functional properties:

  • Polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties and are associated with reduced inflammation and vascular health.
  • Phytosterols, which help lower LDL cholesterol and support cardiovascular health.
  • L-arginine, an amino acid that supports vasodilation and blood circulation.
  • Antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin E, which help protect cells against oxidative damage.

Together, these properties make nuts strategic ingredients within a healthy dietary pattern.

How nuts fit into current health trends

Once their nutritional profile is understood, it becomes clear why nuts fit so naturally into some of today’s leading health and wellness trends.

Plant-based protein and plant-based diets

The rise of vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian diets has increased demand for plant-based protein sources. In this context, nuts have an important role to play.

Beyond specific dietary labels, their protein content is increasingly recognised as an important component of a healthy diet: it contributes to satiety, helps maintain muscle mass and is associated with healthier ageing.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) sets the reference intake for healthy adults at 0.82 g per kilogram of body weight per day, although requirements may vary according to age, physical activity and physiological status. In older adults, for example, protein requirements may increase as the body becomes less efficient at utilising dietary protein.

Digestive health and the gut microbiota

Interest in gut health continues to grow, with particular attention being paid to fibre and compounds that help support a balanced microbiota.

In this respect, nuts provide fibre and bioactive compounds that can act as substrates for beneficial bacteria. When these fibres reach the colon, they are fermented, encouraging the growth of microorganisms associated with better digestive health.

Longevity

Longevity and cardiovascular health are becoming increasingly important areas of focus within the food industry.

A range of studies have associated regular nut consumption with a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as a reduced risk of mortality from different causes. Their potential benefits therefore extend beyond short-term nutrition and form part of a broader approach to long-term health.

Brain health and cognitive function

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain function, yet a significant proportion of the population fails to meet recommended intake levels. At the same time, interest is growing in foods that can support cognitive performance.

Nuts provide nutrients that contribute to healthy brain function throughout different stages of life. From older adults to students and professionals with cognitively demanding lifestyles, nut consumption is increasingly associated with supporting cognitive performance and function.

Appetite control and weight management

Appetite regulation has become an important focus in today’s approach to nutrition. As a result, foods that help promote longer-lasting satiety are gaining relevance.

Thanks to their combination of protein, fibre and unsaturated fats, nuts can help manage hunger naturally and support more mindful eating habits.

The growing interest in nuts is not limited to their nutritional profile. It is also driving innovation in formats and applications designed to suit different lifestyles, from functional snacks and ingredients for haute cuisine to applications in food supplements.

Ultimately, nuts are emerging as a food proposition that brings together health, sustainability and enjoyment in a single concept.
